Billie Carlson (born Bela Mae Grant in Wilmington, NC, in
1923) passed away this last Sunday in the presence of her loving family. Billie
was predeceased by her husband Chas. Edward K. Carlson, to whom she had been
joyfully married for 59 years. The Carlsons raised their family in Manchester,
CT, until they retired to North Carolina to be near their grandchildren from
their daughter Barbara Carlson who lives in Winnabow. The grandchildren are
Lloyd Edward Carlson, his fiancée Teresa Zachara, and Billie Mae Outlaw and her
fiancé Scott Bauer. Billie’s oldest daughter is Billie Anthony who is married
to Michael, and they live in Bloomfield, CT. Her son Bruce is married to
Beverly Fox, and they live in Fort Myers, FL.
Billie Carlson led an extraordinary life! She practiced as
an obstetrical-gynecological nurse, later advancing to become the first Lamaze
Method of Childbirth instructor in New England. She also became one of the
first Nurse Practioners in Connecticut.
Billie loved all people, participating in programs to
advance civil and human rights all her life. As a child in the South, she
bucked the Jim Crow Laws. As an adult she hosted Fresh Air Fund children, a
family from Cuba, she supported Project Concern, and she hosted visitors from
Africa through the World Affairs Council.
Her memorial service will be private. All those wishing to
