Leola Grote

Leola Grote was born at home December 11, 1931 in Gillespie County to Max Arthur and Ella Mae Windom Schuch. She was baptized April 10, 1932 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg and was the oldest of four children. Her family moved to Mason in 1941 and was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church on August 12, 1945.

Leola played basketball and was a member of the Mason Puncher band.

She graduated from Texas Lutheran College in Seguin with a degree in biology/chemistry. She received her medical technology degree from Baptist Memorial Hospital, San Antonio.

She married Walton Edward Grote on April 5, 1952 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason.

While raising five children, she taught Sunday School and worked full time for 34 years at the Mason Memorial Hospital as the medical technologist, x-ray technician, did EKGs and administered anesthesia in the operating room. When the Mason hospital closed, she worked at the Llano Hospital until she retired at age 70. She worked the family ranch with Walton and was the family historian.

She is best remembered for her service and dedication to the community through her work at the Mason Memorial Hospital where she provided a personal touch to all patients. Her smile and friendly approach mitigated stressful situations.

She passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband and family two days short of her 87th birthday.

Leola was preceded in death by her parents Max and Ella Schuch, sister Opal “Pete” Meyer, brother Arles Schuch, and grandson Joel Thomas Smith. She is survived by her husband of 66 years Walton; children Tracy Grote, Ann Brandenberger Grote, Kelcey & Cathy Grote, Curtis & Laura Grote, Faith Grote, and Justin & Ella Grote; brother Skily Schuch, 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers are close family members with Walton and Leola’s lifetime friends serving as honorary pallbearers.

The family would like to express deep felt gratitude to the Baylor Scott & White Llano Hospital staff for treating Leola with special care, dignity and respect: Becky, Carolyn, Collette, Donna, Jaye, Kay, Laura, Marty, Regina, Ruby, Russell, Sara, Sharon, Terri, Dr. Skylar Forrister and Dr. David Hoerster.
