ADAM J. HULIN, 65, UNO FOUNDING TEACHER

Times-Picayune, The (New Orleans, LA) - Saturday, October 23, 1999
Adam J. Hulin, a founding faculty member of the University of New Orleans, died at home Friday of complications from a stroke. He was 65.

Mr. Hulin was born in Lafayette and lived in Kenner for the past 36 years. He served as chairman of the mathematics department from 1977 to 1983. He was director of Institutional Research at UNO from 1984 to 1989 and assistant dean of the College of Sciences from 1976 to 1977.

"A.J. Hulin has been a part of the University of New Orleans from the beginning as a teacher, an administrator and as an active member of the UNO family," Chancellor Gregory O'Brien said. "A part of our tradition of excellence is directly attributable to his efforts. His mark will be felt by UNO students for generations to come."

Mr. Hulin was the namesake of the A.J. Hulin Award in Mathematics, created in 1983. The award, which carries a cash stipend, is given by a vote of the UNO math faculty to students who exhibit qualities of "scholarship, leadership and service."

UNO colleagues say Mr. Hulin was something of a Cajun raconteur.

"A.J. always had a story to tell, a joke or some funny thing that happened at home," said Charles Rees, chairman of the UNO math department. "He was always fun to talk to. He was very upbeat. He did a lot for the math department during his years as chairman by putting forth a very positive image of the department within the university."

Mr. Hulin, who occasionally joked that he "had to think French before he could speak English," earned his master's and doctoral degrees in mathematics from Tulane University. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and science education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

He was co-founder of the Greater New Orleans Mathematics Teachers and held several offices in the organization. He was a recipient of a National Science Foundation Faculty Fellowship and a Ford Foundation Venture Grant. He served on the editorial board of Wadsworth Electronic Publishing.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey Mae Breaux Hulin; three daughters, Belinda Hulin Crissman, Monica Hulin and Angela Hulin Hebert; two sons, Colin Hulin and Brett Hulin; and six grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said Monday at 11 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 3325 Loyola Drive, Kenner. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, with the Rosary at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Garden of Memories in Metairie.
