Dr. Dennis Burton Wisdom died peacefully in Bon Secours Community Hospice House on December 9, 2018 in Richmond, Virginia at the age of 80. He lived a life of service and faithfulness, and we rejoice that because of his faith in Christ we know that he is now with his Savior.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents Chester and Morene Wisdom of Indianapolis, IN. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen Wisdom of Richmond, VA; two sons, Joel (and his wife Kathy and two sons, Jason and Matthew) of Columbia, MD and Tim (and his wife, Amy, and two children, Emma Grace and Josiah) of Richmond, VA; three sisters, Linda Phillips of Indianapolis, IN, Carol Wallace (Tom) of Lenoir, NC, Paula Parton (Virgil) of Indianapolis, IN; and two brothers, Steve Wisdom (Cheryl) of Indianapolis, IN and David Wisdom of Longview, WA.

Dennis was born on December 30, 1937 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri to Chester and Morene Wisdom. His early years were spent on a dairy farm where he enjoyed being a cowboy by rounding up the cows. He thrived while attending one room school houses. Later the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where he graduated from Southport High School in 1956. His relationship with God grew deeper, and he felt called into full-time ministry. Dennis graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina with degrees of Bachelors through Ph.D. in Old Testament Interpretation.

Dennis met Karen Hamilton and was smitten from the first day he saw her in the medical clinic at Bob Jones University. They married in Sterling, Illinois, in 1968. God was at the center of their marriage from the beginning and their love was deep for God and each other. He was the proud father of two boys, Joel and Tim, who remember him as a loving father who consistently encouraged and supported them in life as they pursued the Lord and His plans for them. They are also grateful for the example he left for them in service, generosity, and faithfulness. Dennis loved even more being a grandfather and was very active in their lives.

Dennis served as a professor at Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tennessee for 26 years. He loved teaching Greek, Hebrew, and other Bible courses as he invested in future pastors and Christian workers. Dennis also had a love for music that shined whether he was a member in a choir, worshiping at church, or traveling with his family. Up until his final days with us, he was still making us laugh and feel loved through song. Another of his passions was teaching Sunday school which he did on a regular basis for many years.

After retiring, he and his wife resided in Dalton, Georgia, and later moved to Richmond, Virginia. They did everything together. He enjoyed sports and his favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals and the Tennessee Volunteers. After moving to Richmond, he was an active and dedicated member of Derbyshire Baptist Church where he was a member of the Golden Tones Choir and a member of the Sojourners Sunday School class. Dennis also enjoyed traveling with Karen to see Christian concerts, attending Bible conferences, as well as multiple overseas adventures together.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Friday, December 14, 2018 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens & Funeral Home, 1997 South State Road 135, Greenwood, IN 46143, Reverend Tom Wallace Jr. and Dr. Tom Hamilton will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dennis's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan's Purse at www.samaritanspurse.org.

The family would like to thank neighbors, church family, and the caregivers of the Bon Secours Home Health, Hospice, and the Hospice House for their care and support.
