A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Lock Haven, Clinton County, August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 26 as a private with Co. H, 137th Pennsylvania Infantry. He died from an as yet unknown cause in the military hospital at Chambersburg. A list of veteran burials at Cedar Grove claims he was wounded at the battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, an unverified assertion not reflected in Bates History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file, or the company register. That same burial list also erroneously lists him as a member of Co. K, 107th Pennsylvania Infantry.
On December 28, 1872, his mother applied for a pension, and on December 6, 1877, his father did likewise. Both were successful.
