John Alexander Campbell (Jack) was formerly known as Thomas Howard McClean, born b. May 7, 1895. Jack Campbell had changed his name sometime between 1921 and 1927. He served in WWI under the name Thomas Howard McClean (reg. 1066236) and served in WWII as John Alexander Campbell (L-59884). Thomas was the son of John McClean and Ruth Ransom. His siblings were Bob (half sibling), Maria, William, Mary Catherine (Mae), Charles Elgin, John Stanley, James Russel, Ruth, and Rachel. On Feb 4, 1915 he married Helen "Nellie" Cornfield and they had two children: Amie and Stanley. He enlisted in the CEF 248th Battalion on Mar. 6, 1917 at Toronto, Ontario. He served overseas in England and France, demobbed back to Canada Jam 1919. It is uncertain about what happened between then and 1921 when the census shows him living with his two children in Gananoque. It is known that the children were later raised by their mother. He married Gladys Lawrence July 5, 1929 and they had four children (Leita, William, Dorothy and David) and twin daughters that did not survive childbirth in 1937. During WWI, he attested with the 248th BN and upon reaching England, he was T.O.S. with the 58th BN. He was severally wounded Jan 4, 1918 near Lens, France and spent the remainder of WWI recovering in hospital in England. During WWII, he enlisted with the 64th BN Field Battery (RCAF) and served in Kiska during Operation Cottage. Jack passed away in Melville Feb 3, 1973.
