Nurse's Aide Admits Putting Poison in Friend's Sandwich Springfield, Ill (AP) - State's Attorney Alfred H Greening said that Mrs Roberta Steiger, 26, has told of putting poison in a sandwich eaten by her friend, Miss Helen Hovey, 24, who died Saturday at St John's hospital. Greening has filed murder charges against Mrs Steiger, a nurse's aide who came here a year ago from Rushville. He said she signed a statement made to Deputy Coroner Katherine Rutherford that after a quarrel with Miss Hovey she put rat poison in two peanut sandwiches and intended to take the poison also, but lost her nerve. Miss Hovey, a registered nurse who was born and lived for 13 years in Mount Vernon, recently had resided with Mrs Steiger. Coroner Verne Dragoo, who plans an inquest later this week, said chemical analysis showed a quantity of poison in Miss Hovey's organs.
