Betsey Wingfield Hughes, 96, of Birmingham, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 3, 2014. Betsey was born on March 8, 1918, and was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, CDR, J.L. Hughes Jr.; and son, Cpt. Winston J. Hughes. She is survived by her son, Wingfield Hughes; six grandchildren; 18 great- grandchildren; and other loving family. Betsey was involved in many historical groups, including Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Colonial Wars, United Daughters of the Confederacy, First Families of Virginia, Caxton Club (Birmingham, Alabama), Crepe Myrtle Garden Club (Birmingham, Alabama), Wingfield Family Society. Betsey was a devoted wife and mother and she loved to play bridge. Funeral service to be held at Ivy Creek Methodist Church, Charlottesville, Virginia, on Monday, August 11, 2014, at 11 a.m. Interment to follow at Wingfield Family Cemetery. Services by Hill and Wood Funeral Service, Charlottesville, Virginia.
