Obituary of Richard Hulburd
Richard Merritt Hulburd “TYKE,” 78 of Simi Valley, California, passed away on November 1, 2018, in Simi Valley, California with his daughters and youngest grandson by his side.

Richard “Tyke” was born in Hollywood, California to Nelda Gertrude Drennan and Horace “Bud” Lufkin Hulburd on August 24, 1940. He went to high school at Hollywood Professional School and graduated in 1958.
He attended the University of Illinois where he became a Pilot. After college, he worked as a pilot for Pacific Aeromotive Corp in Burbank, California. He also worked as a certified flight instructor and FAA Designee prior to joining the Army. He was an Army Staff Sergeant, serving for 6 years, from October 1963 until his Honorable discharge in October of 1969.
During that time he served in Los Angeles during the Watts Riots of 1965 and in Vietnam from 1968-1969. He received The Army Commendation Medal for his Meritorious Service in The Republic of Vietnam from September 1968 to September 1969.
He worked as an electrical engineer and company pilot for Maasdam Pow’r Pull in Burbank, California where he worked faithfully until his retirement in 2005.
After retirement, he and his wife Alice joined the square dancing group “Boots and Slippers” in Simi Valley where they spent their time dancing and making friends. Tyke also enjoyed his volunteer work at “For The Troops” in Simi Valley, where he worked for many years. This volunteer job was very important to him; he was driven in his mission to support our deployed military any way he could as he never wanted them to feel abandoned or underappreciated.
Tyke was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Dirks Hulburd. He is survived by his 2 daughters, Kimberly Hulburd Brehme and Gina Hulburd-Schultz. Sons-in-law, Richard Brehme Jr., and Daniel Schultz. Grandchildren: TC Hulburd, Austin Hulburd & wife Bridget, Epiphany Hulburd, Josephine Hulburd-Schultz, Aaron Hulburd-Brehme, Grace Brehme, Joseph Brehme, and Benjamin Brehme. He was predeceased by his sister Louise Anderson Pond and is Survived by his brother Frederic Hulburd & sister-in-law Patricia, and by his sister Bonnie Hulburd Larson. Also survived by his nieces and nephews: Catharine, Heather, Tiffany, Chanel, Michelle, Gerald, Eric, Toni, Christopher, Daniel, Jennifer, Sven, Gretchen, Jeanne, Georges, Therese, Joseph, and Odile.
