Henry Lafayette Middlebrooks was born on July 12, 1838, in Hancock County, Georgia, the child of James Hawley and Cassandra Walton. He married Claudia Snider Pierce on November 27, 1860. They had 12 children in 19 years. He died on May 24, 1905, in Sparta, Georgia, at the age of 66.
