OBIT: Captain G.W. Brown.-Although the people of Scranton were not unprepared for the news of the death of Captain Brown, the intelligence wrought a distinct shock. Captain Brown was on of the early settlers in this district and was a factor in its history. G.W. Brown was born in Bainbridge, Highland county, Ohio, October 5, 1825. When at the age of three the family removed to Bartholomew, county, Indiana. Here is 1846 he was married to Harriet Shew. In September 1861 G.W. Brown raised K company of the 6th Indiana Volunteers. After two years of service at the head of this company, an honorable discharge was granted him on account of his ill health. In 1868 Mr. and Mrs. Brown removed to Osage county. Mrs. Brown died about the year 1890. Captain Brown resided here until 1902, when he and his two daughters, Katherine and Lillie left for Lyons, Kansas, to make their home there. He died at the age of 77 years, 3 months and 18 days. Funeral services, Sunday afternoon, at the Scranton Methodist church were in charge of Rev. Boyd, of Gardner, assisted by Rev. Geo. Wilson. The remains were interred in Scranton cemetery. G. W. Brown was converted and united with the M.E. church, in Richard Hendrick’s log house, which stood where Taylorsville, Ind., is now located, and for sixty years he followed faithfully the teachings of his creed. He was the father of thirteen children, twelve of whom survive him: Asbury Samuel and John Brown of Topeka; George Brown of California, Stephen Brown, of Chanute; Charles Brown, of Whitehead, Okla.; Mrs. H.A. Thomas, of Scranton; Mrs. J.P. Pohemus, of Pittsburg, Kans.; Mrs. J.S. Simmons, of Hutchinson, Kan.; Miss Bertha Brown, of Halstead; and Misses Katie and Lillie Brown, of Lyons. 30 Jan 1903
