Jonah Baxter was born on March 30, 1886 in Joelton, Tennessee, the son of Jim Baxter and Mary ( -- ) Baxter James Morris "Jim" Baxter (1843–1940) and Sarah Katherine (Jackman) Baxter (1848–1923).

He was married about 1909 as the 1st husband of Allie (Malone) (Baxter) (Walborn) Hodges (1888–1948), and they were later divorced. {Alllie Hodges died on June 4, 1948 in Battle Creek, Michigan.}

A retired farmer living at 811 2nd Avenue South in Nashville, Jonah was 60 years old when he died at home of arteriosclerosis on November 16, 1946. Burial was the next day in Forest Grove Cemetery, Joelton.
