It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edith Lenore Condit Carney at age 95 on October 30, 2018, in Lancaster, CA. She was a loving mother and matriarch who guided, inspired, and nurtured multiple generations within her family. Throughout her long and active life, she touched the lives of many, with her inner strength, sharp intelligence, courage to confront injustice, and fierce loyalty to all those who were close to her. Words cannot express how deeply she'll be missed.
Edith was born on August 19, 1923, in Hagerman, Idaho, the seventh of ten children of John Winford Condit and Delia Idabell Parks Condit, and second wife Pearl Condit. She is survived by two of her siblings, Eunice Helterbran of Bend, Oregon and Clayton Condit (Jo Ann) of Phoenix, Arizona. Edith was predeceased by brothers Leonard, Carroll and Sheldon; and by sisters Rose Lily, Edna Donahue (Johnny), Iona Devries (Adolph), and Leona Storer (Richard).
Edith spent her youth in Hagerman working in her father's combination motor-hotel/grocery store/real estate office. She liked to brag that she sold her first house when she was 15 and a sophomore in high school.
During WWII Edith served her country by working for the army at Ft Lewis in Washington State driving a 2 1/2 ton truck plus she chauffeured the staff-car for the base colonel; then she worked for the Navy in Tacoma as office manager for the base's inventory. She often said working at the naval base was the "funnest job" she ever had!
At the end of the war Edith returned to Hagerman where she met her future husband, Leslie Jay Carney of Caldwell, Idaho. Les was employed by Morrison Knudsen working on a hydroelectric project in the Hagerman Valley - a vocation that would govern the lives of this couple for the next forty years. Edith and Les moved frequently during their marriage, following the hydroelectric dam projects as they moved across the country.
Edith and Les arrived in the Antelope Valley in 1970, and settled in Palmdale. Les went to work on the Pearblossom Pumping Station and Edith went to school to get her CA Real Estate license. She began selling houses in 1971, and retired from the profession (at Century 21 – Doug Anderson) at the incredible age of 92. Edith loved the interaction she had with the many families she found homes for. She was always honest and fair in her business dealings and her career flourished. Her husband Les passed away in 1985, after almost 37 years of marriage.
Edith was always a believer in giving back to her community and volunteered with the American Red Cross. She was active as a volunteer in several states. She was a governing board member at the Antelope Valley Chapter serving four years as Board Chairperson. She was instrumental in the implementation of the new AV Chapter Headquarters facility in Palmdale.
In addition to numerous real estate professional awards and Red Cross recognitions, Edith was recognized for her community work, and her social activism, with ornate proclamations from the California State Senate, California Assembly, two mayors of San Francisco and a Letter of Appreciation from Congressional leadership.
She loved her children (and all children) and cherished family above all else. She saw the true worth in everyone. Edith was a mother, cheerleader, friend and teacher to four children: Shannon Gorden, Ted Carney, Colleen Carney Hodgkins (Terry) and Patrick Jay Carney (Hossein). Edith was a loving grandmother to five: Travis, Leslie and Joe Hodgkins (Elizabeth), Melanie D'Avanzo, and Meghan Gorden (Antonio). Edith adored her great grandchildren: Kennedy and Jessica D'Avanzo, twins Matthew and Abel Garcia and baby Gabriel Garcia.
Edith lived a full life. She was an avid Dodger Fan! She was politically engaged and loved talking about current events with family and friends. She was adventurous, spontaneous, loved to travel and was ready to go at a moment's notice. It wasn't enough to read just about the history she loved; she enjoyed traveling the world to see it for herself.
We remember the strength, dignity, love and joy she radiated. We will never forget her beautiful blue eyes, her infectious laugh and lovely smile. People were drawn to her, she was interested in everyone and everything. She made everyone feel special. She was the anchor of our family and the greatest positive influence in our lives as she set the tone with her avid support and unconditional love. We will be forever grateful for all the amazing times we shared.
Services for Edith will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018, at 10am at the Chapel of the Valley Mortuary at 1755 East Avenue R, Palmdale, CA 93550. In lieu of flowers please feel free to donate in Edith's name to the charity of your choice.
