Mary was born on March 7, 1928 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the daughter of Dennis and Ellen (Twoomey) Downing. On February 9, 1958 she married the love of her life Robert Ainslie at St. Peter Church in Cambridge, MA.
Mary lived an extremely full and rich life; a life of service. Whatever she was doing or working on, she was all in; whether it was her education, her job or helping someone who was in need. She was Manager at both Fort Sheridan and Great Lakes Naval Base. At GLNB, she was Director of Treatment and Family Support for the substance abuse program. Through AA she sponsored many people. Mary would be there if you needed her anytime day or night. She enjoyed her time working and being part of The Church of Holy Apostles. But, most of all, she really loved her retirement job working for Marshall Fields in the Bridal Registry department. She knew her china, flatware and proper etiquette.
Mary was always planning for the next holiday. She truly made holidays magical. She loved flowers and had a new bouquet or plant for every occasion and sent or delivered some to others. Mary always sent cards because she knew people liked getting them in the mail. She was always dressed for the occasion from her outfit to her jewelry and shoes.
Mary loved her family and friends. She looked forward to spending time with them and loved being part of their lives. They meant everything to her. Her face would light up when her granddaughter would enter the room. Mary will forever be remembered as a strong woman, dear friend, wonderful sister and remarkable mother & grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter Maryellen Tomei; her two grandchildren Molly K. Tomei and Daniel (Donna) Liddy; her two great-grandchildren Ainslie and Roisen.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert F. Ainslie, her parents Dennis and Ellen Downing; her brother William Downing and sister and brother-in-law Eileen and John Bendel.
Visitation will take place on December 8, 2018 from 9:30am to 10:30am at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 W. Bull Valley Road, McHenry. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30am followed by interment at the church cemetery.
