Tendler, Roy, - 93, of Margate, NJ, entered into eternal rest surrounded by his loving family on Monday July 10, 2017. Born in Philadelphia he was the son of boxing legend, Lew Tendler and Celia (Lasker) Tendler. Roy was happily married to his devoted wife, Patricia "Pat" (Degnan) for 38 years until Pat's untimely death in 1991. Roy went to elementary school and high school in Philadelphia and Miami Beach where he excelled in baseball, basketball and football. He attended college at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Penn State University, Cornell University and John Hopkins. Roy proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 315th Infantry attaining the rank of Sergeant. He fought in many battles throughout the Rhineland and Central Europe and by sheer luck was the only one in his squad to make it home alive. In addition to receiving the Purple Heart for his injuries sustained during the Battle of the Bulge, he also received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Roy was the owner and operator of Lew Tendler's Steak House in Atlantic City from the late 1950's to the mid 1970's. Following which he was a liquor salesman for Jersey National and Fedway Liquors from 1978 until his retirement at age 82. Roy, or "Mr. T' as he was affectionately known by many of his friends, was a gifted athlete having played football and basketball at the University of North Carolina and Penn State. He later took up squash and tennis when he moved to the Jersey Shore in the early 50's and quickly excelled at both. In addition to playing multiple sports, he loved working with kids and for many years he volunteered to coach little league and senior league baseball in Margate. Mr. T was a kind, gentle man who always put the interests of others ahead of his own. He always had a joke to share and patience to spare. He loved his Phillies and enjoyed nothing more than soaking up some sun on the beach or in his own backyard while eating a delicious piece of his favorite food, watermelon! Roy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by two sons; Hal (Yuki) Tendler, Paul (Marianne) Tendler, granddaughter; Caesarea Tendler, grandson; Luke Tendler, great granddaughter; Christina "Melia" Smith, dear friend and companion; Jean Buckner, and a host of other close friends.
