Mr. Mathis was born March 14, 1919, in Sylva, N.C., and had lived in the Vancouver area since 1942. He attended the Burton Church of God.
A daughter, Joann Erickson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary E., at home; two daughters, Doris Neal and Christine Terwilleger, both of Portland; two brothers, Vance of Ashville, N.C., and Ted Mull of Sylva; two sisters, Sarah Blanton of South Carolina and Blanche Greenarch of Waynesville, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel. The casket will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
