Slidell Police Department, Louisiana

End of Watch Wednesday, August 13, 1975

Sergeant Earl Lucien Alfred, 35, was shot and killed while responding to a robbery call at Champagne Jewelers. He was shot and killed with his own gun as he struggled with the suspect. A 20-year-old store employee who the suspect stabbed 22 times managed to crawl to Sergeant Alfred's patrol car and call for help. The 26-year-old suspect was apprehended, convicted of murder, and sentenced to life.

In August 1975, Third Street in front of the Slidell Police Department was re-named Sgt Alfred Drive in his honor. In August 2015, the entire length of Third Street was re-named in his honor.

Sergeant Alfred had served with the Slidell Police Department for five years, and was the city's first black policeman. He was known around town as "Officer Friendly." He was a US Army veteran, who loved the city.

Earl is survived by his wife, Doris, and her 5-year-old daughter, Valecia, whom Alfred adopted. He is also survived by his two other children, Natalie Simmons, 9, and Calvin.

Note: Doris and Calvin passed away before August 2015.

A Times-Picayune article on Aug 16, 1975 said that Alfred will be buried in Morice Cemetery off US- 190. Is this Maurice Robert Cemetery near Camp Salmen?
