MOULTON WEEKLY TRIBUNE

J. W. Hurd, a lifetime resident of this community, passed away at the St. Joseph hospital in Centerville,
Monday morning at 9:00 a. m. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Last week he was stricken with pneumonia and was removed to the Centerville hospital where death came.
Mr. Hurd was well known in this community where he had been active in public life. For more than 13 years he resided in the Orleans community where he accepted his full shares of duties. He served many years as school director and as president of the school district. He moved to Moulton in 1921 where he continued his life of usefulness. He held the position of town marshal and for the past several years has been Justice of the Peace of Washington township.
He was a man who made friends readily and who accepted life's problems cheerfully.
John William Hurd, son of John and Sarah Hurd, was born in Appanoose county, near Moulton, December 7, 1869, and departed this life, September 27, 1937, at the age of 67 years, 9 months and 20 days.
He was baptized by Rev. Hughes and joined the Methodist church in the Pella district in 1910. Six year ago he transfered his membership to the Moulton Methodist church.
He was married to Anna Penegar on December 28, 1890, and to this union was born six children, one son,
preceding him in death. Besides his devoted companion he is survived by five children, Mrs. George Adams,
Centerville; Carl, Mrs. Paul McDanel, Mrs. Ward Daniels and Mrs. Luther Horn, all of Moulton, and a host of
other relatives and friends. One sister, Flora Wedmore, of South Dakota, is also left to mourn his passing.
In addition to a son he was preceded in death by his father, mother and the following brothers and sisters,
Mrs. Lizzie Siler, Lucy Gordan, Martha Jordan, Laura Ransom, Charley, Thomas and Sam Hurd.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Hitchcock Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Miller, pastor of the Centerville Nazarene church, assisted by Rev. F. Harold Essert, of the Moulton Methodist church.
Interment was made at Oakland cemetery.
