James was born to Morris Richardson Johnson and Jemima Blanche (Winkler) Johnson in Ridge Farm, IL on September 7, 1915. He had one sister, Mary K. (Ferguson) Johnson who preceded him in death in 1968. James graduated from Clayton High School (Clayton, IN) in 1934 and served in the US Army, 24th Armored Engineer Battalion, 4th Armored Division and was honorably discharged.

He married Arlene May (Wetherbee) Johnson August 30, 1944. They had two children: Bonnie Lou Johnson (Camby, IN) and Thomas Lynn Johnson (Plainfield, IN).

Jim and Arlee made a living in the 1940s as live radio entertainers at KMMJ (Grand Island, NE) and WNAX (Yankton, SD). After leaving radio, Jimmie worked as a milling machine operator at Link-Belt Chain Division in Indianapolis and retired in 1976.

Jim loved music, gardening, birding, sitting in the swing and just "piddling around", as he called it, in his shop behind his home.

Jim was a Christian man and loving husband and father. He served for many years as a trustee and usher at First Baptist Church, Plainfield, IN.
