LYNN -Gloria Ann (Palumbo) Carritte, age 89, died in Lynnfield in the last hour of the day, Tuesday, September 18, 2018. For the last five years, she was a resident of Sunrise of Lynnfield. Prior to moving to Sunrise, Gloria was a life long resident of Lynn.
Born in March 1929, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Aida (DiVirgilio) Palumbo. She attended the Lynn public schools and graduated from Lynn English High School in 1946, where, according to her year book, “Glo’s most interesting experience was ‘teaching’ Miss Bradbury’s French and English classes.”
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Simmons College in Boston and a Masters of Science degree in Nursing and Education from Boston College. Married in June 1952, Gloria was preceeded in death by her husband, William E. Carritte.
The mother of four, Gloria is survived by her three sons: William Carritte and his wife Dinah of Fairfax, Virginia, Joseph Carritte and his wife Kathy of Lynn, and Robert Carritte of Vienna, Virginia. She was also the mother of her late daughter, Mary Ann (Carritte) Shorten. Gloria also is survived by five grandchildren: Patrick, Sean and his wife Elizabeth, and Ryan of Lynn, and Teresa (Carritte) Reedy and her husband John of Manassas, Virginia, and William Benjamin Carritte and his wife Jessica of So. Boston, Virginia. Gloria was also delighted to have three great-grandchildren, Sophia, John, and Rebecca.
Gloria began her professional career as a private duty nurse, a clinical instructor, and instructor of nursing. In 1967, Gloria joined Catherine Labouré School of Nursing where she was instrumental in leading the underlying research and obtaining the grant funding from the United States Public Health Service which enabled the three year diploma school run by the Daughters of Charity to transition in 1971 into a junior college for nursing and allied health education. Gloria spent 25 years at Labouré College in various roles as Assistant to the President of Labouré College. She was an active member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and served as a member of the board of directors of the Council on Postsecondary Education, a national organization that oversaw regional and specialized accrediting boards. After retiring from Labouré, she worked several years for the Visiting Nurses Association of Lynn as the coordinator of grants.
A devote Roman Catholic, Gloria was baptized in Saint Leonard’s in the north end of Boston. She was a long time communicant of Saint Pius V Catholic Church in Lynn. As a young child, Gloria was a skillful classical piano player, having performed live on local radio broadcasts on several occasions. An avid life-long reader, she enjoyed history, biography, and fiction. A passionate traveler, Gloria and Bill, explored nearly every state in the Union, toured many foreign counties, and enjoyed more than 300 days on ocean cruises.
Visitation will be held on Monday, September 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the CUFFE-McGINN Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius V Church, Lynn. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Lynn. Family and friends are welcome.
