He was the son of Matthew Maroney and his wife Kate, who were Irish immigrants.
He grew up in Philadelphia.

He married Katie Ferriter, on 10-24-1888, in Knoxville, Tennessee
They adopted a son named John Hood Meroney (b. 7-29-1889), in 1890.
They had a son named William Patrick (b. 9-28-1893), who died at age 17.
They had a daughter named Helen (b. 8-12-1916), who married Mr. Chandler.

Shortly after they adopted John, they moved to West Virginia. But by 1900, they were living in Newport News, Virginia. They soon returned to Knoxville.

William worked as a coppersmith and as a pipefitter. His wife died in 1907. In 1908, he went to work on the Panama Canal for a few months. He was paid 65 cents and hour. He then lived at 416 Chamberlain Street, in Knoxville. by 1911, he was working for the railroad and living at 209 Lawrence Ave. He was not listed in the 1912 directories, or any subsequent ones, so it is thought that he died in 1912.
