Born in Burke County, GA on February 14, 1926, to the late James Horace Bell (1896–1967) and Edla Chance Bell (1899–1977); wife of the late Dr. Charles Vance Abernethy, Sr., a dentist in Forest City for over fifty years and preceded her death in 2013, they were married for 68 years.
After high school, she moved to Atlanta to attend business school and met Charlie on a blind date at The Varsity. Once he graduated from Emory University's School of Dentistry, they settled in Forest City, NC, where he opened his dental practice, raised their family, and immersed themselves in the community.
Earned a degree from Gardner-Webb University and worked for twenty-five years in the Continuing Education Department of Isothermal Community College. After retirement, they traveled the country together.
An active member of the First United Methodist Church, cherished her vast collection of Blue Willow china, and played a spirited game of bridge.
Survivors include her son, Rod Abernethy (Suzanne Ruggles); grandchildren Amy Brogdon (Ralph), Sara Abernethy (Chris Borreson), and Matthew Abernethy; great-grandchildren, Lance Cpl. Danielle Kyle and Charles Kyle; nephews, Paul "Mac" Abernethy, Jr. and Judge Richard Abernethy; nieces, Susan Abernethy and Mary Jo Abernethy; and daughter-in-law, Patrice Abernethy.
Predeceased by her oldest son, Charles Vance Abernethy, Jr. (8 Oct 1947 – 10 Nov 2009).
Graveside services were held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, November 21, 2018, in the Cool Springs Cemetery, Forest City, NC, with Reverend Faye Herbin officiating.
Visitation followed at the graveside.
