Lula Barneycastle Carruthers, age 72, passed away on September 27, 2000 after a battle with cancer.
She was born November 14, 1926 in Votaw, Texas to Elzie and Viola Barneycastle. She moved to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1978. Lula married Robert H. Carruthers, March 12, 1995. They lived in Bellingham, Washington, four years before relocating in West Jordan, Utah in 1999. Lula is a member of the LDS Church, West Jordan Mountain View 10th Ward.
Lula was a registered nurse with a Masters Degree. She was employed many years at Hermann Hospital, Houston, Texas as Head Nurse. She also worked in public health in Houston. Upon relocating to Salt Lake City, she worked for the Department of Corrections as an administrator in the medical department at the Draper Prison. She later worked in the medical department of the Oxbow Jail. While living in Bellingham she worked for the county jail as head of the medical department. She retired from that position; returned to Utah and enjoyed a life of leisure until she was stricken with cancer.
Lula enjoyed traveling and collecting souvenirs from the many countries she visited abroad, including Israel, Egypt, China, Russia, Mexico, Great Britain, as well as many places in the United States.
Lula is survived by her husband; sister Eula Neel; nieces, great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by father, mother, and five brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 30, 2000 at 11 a.m., in the West Jordan Mountain View 10th Ward (8435 South 2700 West, West Jordan, Utah). Friends may call Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment, Redwood Memorial Estates (6500 South Redwood Rd.) Funeral directors, Russon Brothers Mortuary, SLC.
