From The Deseret News (Salt Lake City, UT) - Tuesday, January 8, 2008:
Darrell C. Dana, beloved and respected husband, father and grandfather, passed from this life on January 5, 2008 at the age of 86. He was born June 14, 1921 in Ogden, Utah to Charles Roswell Dana and Sarah Shore Dana, the sixth of seven children.
The family moved to Tracy, California when Darrell was four years old. He graduated from Tracy Union High School in 1939 and later the Boeing School of Aeronautics. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and received training at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia. He was on the SS General Ballou in the Pacific, stationed in Calcutta, India, and also served in Singapore, Manila, and Perth, Australia. On military leave, he married Eila Mae Romney in Redwood City, California on July 14, 1944. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 4, 1945. They were married for nearly 55 years.
Darrell was a man of many interests and abilities which he shared enthusiastically with his family and others. He was employed by United Air Lines as a lead mechanic in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California for over 40 years. He was a skilled mechanic and could fix just about anything. His crowning achievement in life was his devoted care for over 30 years to his beloved wife who was confined to a wheelchair with Multiple Sclerosis. Though he always considered it a privilege, his personal sacrifice earned him the love and admiration of all who knew him. After retiring, he and Eila moved to Sandy, Utah in 1990. After her death on February 9, 2000, Darrell endured many years of failing personal health with quiet dignity, acceptance and patience. Again he inspired and taught us by his daily example. The family wishes to express grateful appreciation to Vistacare Hospice and the wonderful staffs of the Wentworh and Stratford in Draper for their gentle care and kindness to him.
Darrell is survived by his three children: Patricia (Don) Carpenter, Draper; Marcia (Bill) Aird, Spanish Fork; Kenneth (Karen) Dana, Pacifica, CA; eight granddaughters, 14 great grandchildren; and sister, Audrey Castillo of Gilbert, AZ.
Funeral services will be held 12 noon on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary Chapel, 3401 S. Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, where friends and family may call from 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
