US Congresswoman. She served in the United States House of Representatives from the 4th District of South Carolina from January 3, 1987 to January 3, 1993. Her father, Olin D. Johnston, served as both the Governor of South Carolina and as a United States Senator. She graduated from Columbia College with a B.A. degree in 1961 and later did her graduate work at the University of South Carolina. During the 1960s, she worked as a recruiting officer for both the Peace Corps and VISTA programs and as a director of a Head Start program. From 1969 to 1970, she worked on the staff of Rep. James R. Mann. In the 1970s, she came back to South Carolina and served on both the Spartanburg County Council and the South Carolina State Senate. In 1986, she, as a Democrat, ran for the United States House of Representatives from the 4th District of South Carolina and was successful in the November general election that year. She went on to serve three terms in the House before losing her re-election bid in 1992 to Republican Bob Inglis. During her tenure in the House, she served on three committees: Veterans’ Affairs; Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs; and the Select Committee on Hunger. She later was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 1994. She later taught at Spartanburg Methodist College and was also involved in both church and political activities.
