The son of Joseph Arthur & Jane Elmira (Woodburn) Ege, in 1860 he was a student living with and/or working for future 130th Pennsylvania Infantry comrade Robert McLaughlin in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-one in Newville August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 14 as the 2nd sergeant of Co. E, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, then promoted to 1st sergeant August 17, 1862, and to 2nd lieutenant to date December 13, 1862. He suffered a "slight" head wound at the battle of Fredericksburg December 13 and shot again in the arm and chest at the battle of Chancellorsville May 3, 1863. His pension records do not reflect either of those injuries, but they speak of asthma, which he claimed derived from a cold combined with a malarial fever and colic allegedly contracted prior to the battle of Fredericksburg. He bragged that he never missed a day of duty but in fact received a ten-day furlough to date March 7, 1863. He honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
2. Enlisted again at the stated age of twenty-one in Harrisburg June 20, 1863, and mustered into state service June 26 as 1st lieutenant of Co. F, 1st Pennsylvania (Ramsey's) Battalion. Promoted to captain July 13, 1863, he honorably discharged with his company January 9, 1864.
3. Enlisted once more at the stated age of twenty-one January 13, 1864, and mustered into federal service February 26 as captain of Co. D, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, a regiment formed in part from the veterans of the 1st Pennsylvania Battalion. Promoted to lieutenant colonel to date June 19, 1865, he honorably discharged with the regiment August 3, 1865.

He married Henrietta Virginia Richardson September 2, 1868, and fathered Henrietta D. (b. 08/05/60 [calculated], d. 10/09/70, Arthur Richardson (b. 01/08/72), Sarah G. (b. 06/23/74), Margaret Woodbine (b. 08/10/76), Katherine Moury (b. 05/22/81), and Josephine Marchan (b. 08/25/85). He lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for five years following the war, relocated to Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, working in the real estate and insurance business, then moved to Philadelphia in 1879 where he ultimately became a custodian of the United States Mint. Henrietta died September 9, 1889, and is buried in her hometown of Greensburg. He married Amanda Schisler September 10, 1894, in Philadelphia, but she died June 25, 1895. He last married widow Sarah C. Parsons, née Manness.
