Benjamin Jones Hagler was a native of the Carolinas and [was] born in 1791. He was 21 years of age when he participated in the War of 1812 and at the close that conflict he and several brothers came north and settled here in Madison County, Illinois, two miles east of Troy where they spent the remainder of their lives. Benjamin Hagler's wife was Elizabeth Graham; they had fourteen children.
The ground for Gilead cemetery was donated by Benjamin. He was a devout Christian and a member of the Methodist church. He was among the first people to be buried in the cemetery.
