Rita Marie Bonagura was born on August 11, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA the daughter of Thomas Anthony and Marie Giuseppe (Cirone) Bonagura. She was baptized into the Catholic faith and confirmed at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Roman Catholic Church in South Philadelphia. Rita attended St. Nicholas of Tolentine School and graduated from St. Maria Goretti High School in South Philadelphia. She went on to attend college courses at both Temple University in Philadelphia and Northland Community & Technical College in Thief River Falls.

While still in school, she worked for Dr. Romeo Luongo ENT, where she excelled as his assistant and gained a plethora of medical experience and knowledge, along with lifelong friends and memories. She also worked at the Philadelphia Produce Market and briefly managed the facility, becoming the first woman to do so.

In the 60s, Rita met and fell in love with Thomas Arthur Quirk. Although their relationship did not sustain, together they had Rita’s first child Thomas Anthony Bonagura II. Later in the mid 70’s, Rita fell in love with and married Pete Evangeli. Shortly after, she had a beautiful baby girl, Marie Christine Bonagura. Although the marriage ended, the family of three forged on together, facing all of life’s ups and downs together. Rita was a proud and strong single mother who taught her children grit and resilience. Rita loved and believed in her children. She fostered in them the values she held dear- faith, respect, education, music, and generosity.

On August 24, 1982 Rita married William Holden Vaughan in Red Lake Falls, MN. William welcomed Rita’s children Thomas and Marie and the family made their home on the Vaughan Ten Acres near Highlanding, MN.

Rita loved Jazz music. In the 1960’s & 1970’s Rita was hostess at the Jazz At Home Club. She was an active member of the Philadelphia Clef Club and remained involved until recent years. Through these roles she met and developed friendships with many of the great Jazz musicians of the time in both New York and Philadelphia.

She was a Philatelist from an early age and enjoyed collecting various stamps and first day covers.

Since the mid 70’s she enjoyed going to Casinos, usually playing penny and nickel slot machines just for the thrill and atmosphere.

Rita saw people with her heart and not her eyes. She welcomed people into her life of every race and religion. She loved diversity and immersed her family in rich cultural experiences. Rita was an includer. She always made room for one more at her kitchen table and willingly shared whatever she had with others. She LOVED giving gifts and gave consistently whether out of abundance or scarcity.

Rita loved dearly all five of her grandchildren and had a special relationship with each. She remained an active and involved Grandma in her Jersey grandchildren’s lives even after moving to MN with her daughter and son in law and their children.

She loved her family, loved life and loved fancy things. She was a real character; a tough, passionate Italian woman with a heart of gold. Rita treasured her Italian Catholic heritage and was a member of the Sons (Daughters) of Italy and The Lions Club. She enjoyed cooking traditional Italian food and was proud to pass her secrets on to her daughter Marie.

Survivors include her son Tom (Diane); daughter Marie (Tony); grandchildren Rose Marie, John Paul, Joseph , Ignacio & Fatima; siblings Frances and Annamarie (Tom); and many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband William in 1987; parents; and brother-in-law Frank Manzoni.
