Enlisted, April 15, 1907, in Troop 6, Squadron C Cavalry, NYNG, Brooklyn, NY. he was transferred, May 25, 1909, to Troop 8. He served in the ranks becoming the 1sr Sergeant, May 31, 1910. He was commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, May 7, 1912, and assigned to Troop F, 2nd Cavalry, NYNG, Staten Island, NY. Troop F became part of the 1st Cavalry Regiment, NYNG, December 10, 1913.

Troop F, 1st Cavalry Regiment , NYNG, mustered in for service, on the Mexican border, June 30, 1916. The 1st NY Cavalry was assigned to Camp McAllen, Texas, part of the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 27th Division ). He served as the commander of Troop F on the Mexican border, Troop F returned to Staten Island, NY and mustered out of border service, March 17, 1917.

World War 1, the 1st NY Cavalry reorganized for the World War as the 104th and 106th Machine Gun Battalions', 27th Division. The 27th division was assigned to Camp Wadsworth, SC, for training and he was transferred as commander of Company G, 102nd Ammunition Training, 27th Division.

He was transferred, January 25, 1918, to the 106th Machine Gun Battalion. After training at Camp Wadsworth the 106th MG Battalion, shipped out for Europe, May 10, 1918, from Newport News, VA, aboard the USS Antigone. The battalion docked at Brest, France, May 25, 1918.

After additional training in France, the 27th Division entered the Lines in mid-July 1918. He saw combat in both Belgium and France. He returned to the States as a Captain, January 3, 1919 and discharged January 15, 1919.

His brother, Lieutenant Edward Cuthbert Platt, was killed in action November 7, 1917, vicinity of Passchendaele, France. He was a member of the Canadian Army. His brother Horace Platt also served in the 1st NY Cavalry.
