Sue Woods Smith, 86, passed away peacefully at home in Durham, North Carolina on November 21,2017. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Joe E. Smith.

She was born the daughter of Samuel Clyde Woods and Susie Huddleston Woods in Beckley, West Virginia and spent the majority of her life in the mountain state before moving to North Carolina to be closer to family.

Sue’s career as an educator focused on adult and vocational education, helping individuals acquire the skills they needed to improve their lives. She earned an undergraduate degree and Master’s +45 from Marshall University. Sue served as the founder of the Training Place at the Charleston Town Center. Under her leadership, the program received the United States Secretary of Education Award for Outstanding Program and the Outstanding West Virginia Vocational Program Award. She retired from the Kanawha County School System in 2001 after serving more than thirty years in positions that also included Garnet Career Center, Benjamin Franklin Career Center and Herbert Hoover High School.

Sue was always searching for ways to improve her own skills and those of others she mentored. She chartered the Town Center Toastmasters International Club to teach communication and leadership skills and also served in several officer positions. She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was a Past President of Kanawha County Business Education Association and a member of Charleston Town Center Lions Club.

She is survived by her daughters, Karen Smith Cochran and husband Steve, of Winter Park, Florida; Patricia Smith of Morrisville, North Carolina; granddaughter, Gabriela Cochran; many friends, nieces and nephews and her beloved canine companion, Jewel. The family would like to thank Dr. Carlos Sotolongo and the team of Triangle Family Practice for their outstanding care and support throughout her wellness journey.

The family will receive visitors at Mrs. Smith’s home in North Carolina on Tuesday, November 28th between 4PM – 8PM. A service celebrating Sue’s life will be held in Charleston in the new year.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Marks United Methodist Church, 900 Washington St E, Charleston, WV 25301 http://stmarkswv.org/ or to a charity of your choice. The family is being assisted with funeral arrangements by Snodgrass Funeral Home.
