Born Tom Henry Putnam on 21 September 1916 in Smithville, Bastrop County, Texas.

After graduating fom Smithville High School, he fell in love with Willie Grace Rosanky (who went on to become one out of only 1,024 women to complete the WWII Women's Army Service Pilot (WASP) civil service flight training program).

Tom attended Baylor University for two years, where he studied aviation and took pre-flight training courses.

Tom Putnam and Grace married on 9 March 1940, at Smithville’s First Christian Church.

Tom was called-up in the Army Air Corps shortly after 7 Dec 1941; enlisting as an Aviation Cadet on 2 January 1942 at Ellington Field near Houston, Texas.

He graduated with pilot class 42-G at Goodfellow Field near San Angelo, Texas.

After fighter pilot tactics training, he was assighed to the 47th Fighter Squadron, 15th Fighter Group, VII Fighter Command, 7th Air Force and flew combat missions in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

At the end of the war, the long-separated Putnams didn’t fly into each others’ arms. Regretfully, Tom admitted to straying from their marital vows, and they subsequently divorced.

Tom passed away in July 1965 at McAllen, Hidalgo County, Texas.
