Dorothy Lee Bowling Giles, 94, of Arrington, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. Dorothy was born on January 21, 1924, in Arrington, the daughter of the late Annie Louise Stevens Bowling and Harry Randolph Bowling.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Charles Jackson Giles, Sr., by her brother, Henry David Bowling, and by her sister, Annie Bowling Umbarger.

Dorothy was a lifetime member of Woodland Baptist Church in Colleen, VA. She served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, church treasurer, and administrator of Woodland Memorial Burial Park. Dorothy's love for her church and for flowers and gardening combined in her flower ministry at Woodland. She created beautiful, lush arrangements for the church and for the community using flowers she grew or harvested from the wild. Dorothy was also instrumental in planting and maintaining Woodland's rose and perennial gardens, sharing natural beauty at every opportunity.

Dorothy also expressed her creativity through writing and painting. She discounted her artistic gift, saying she created her artwork through the help of expert instruction and her own determination. However, her paintings, especially those of livelihood during the Depression Age, have charmed many observers. Her memoirs of "Making Do" have entertained countless readers.

Dorothy's professional life focused on business enterprises. Early in her career, she worked for Central Virginia Electric Cooperative. Employment at First National Bank of Nelson County in 1957 began Dorothy's tenure of over 30 years in banking, ending with her retirement in 1989 as an Administrative Loan Officer.

Dorothy was active in civic affairs, serving in various positions of the Nelson County Historical Society and of Nelson County Garden Club, and becoming a life member of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., and of National Garden Clubs, Inc. She was also an avid genealogist and enjoyed unraveling many family histories.

Dorothy is survived by two sons, Charles Jackson Giles, Jr., and wife Pam of Arrington, VA, and David Bowling Giles and wife Kerry of Amherst, VA. Additional survivors are three grandchildren, David Christian Giles and wife Jami of Austin, TX, Jonathan Alexander Giles of Lynchburg, VA, and Chelsea Page Giles of San Antonio, TX; brother William Stevens Bowling and wife Betty of Appomattox, VA; sister-in-law Thelma Giles Hughes of Appomattox, VA; nieces Jenny Brewer, Nancy Saunders, Sarah Burnett and husband Tim, Jane Mays, Brenda Bowling and husband Marc Raskin, and Pettis Bowling and husband Charles Murphy; nephew Charles David Umbarger and wife Penny; and numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 4, 2018, 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Woodland Baptist Church in Colleen. The funeral service will be held at Woodland Baptist Church, on Monday, November 5, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Dr. Michael Fitzgerald and Pastor Greg McCormick officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Memorial Burial Park. The family suggests that those wishing to make memorials consider Woodland Baptist Church, 4434 Thomas Nelson Highway, Arrington, VA 22922.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel of Lovingston (434-263-4097).
