Dean Bassett Walker, 87, of Lovell, died peacefully October 28, 2018, surrounded by loving family at the New Horizons Care Center in Lovell. He was born in Kane on April 21, 1931, to Ariel Francis and Helen Lucinda Bassett Walker. He was the eldest of 5 boys.
Dean spent his first two years with his family in Kane on his Grandpa Bassett’s farm. In 1937 the family bought part of his Grandpa Walker’s homestead and he helped build a log house and a nice farmstead. At age 16 Dean took a year off from school at his father’s passing and took over the farm. He then returned to graduate from Lovell High School in 1950. He also took an early interest in flying and, on his own volition, obtained a private pilot license before graduating from high school.
Dean married his high school sweetheart, Rebecca Allred, on May 22, 1951, in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dean and Rebecca’s posterity include 9 children, 50 grandchildren, 112 great grandchildren….and counting. Dean served his country in the Army National Guard and attended tank mechanic school, graduating second in his class.
Dean loved his family, the Savior, and his church (serving in many callings, including the presidency of the Elder’s and Seventy’s quorums, High Priest Group Leader and teacher, Scoutmaster Bishopric, etc.). He loved woodworking and photography, and he was passionate about flying, farming, and inventing farm machinery and other useful things. Besides working as a farmer and a pilot, he also worked at the Great Western Sugar Company in Lovell for several campaigns. Dean continued farming as long as he possibly could—till Rebecca couldn’t boost him up the special ladder Jim had built for him to get into the tractor. He looked forward to visits from his siblings and children and grandchildren.
Dean is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bob Walker, Bob’s wife, Yvonne, a daughter-in-law, Susan Ferguson Walker, and a great granddaughter, Kate Theurer. He is survived by his wife Rebecca, four sons: Ronald (JoAnn) Walker, Craig (Careen) Walker, Jim (Debbie) Walker, and David (Tara) Walker; five daughters: Lynn (Brent) Bassett, Sandra (David) Briggs, Beverly (Mark) Seward, Susan (David) Wilkerson, and Karen (Bart) Jones; 50 grandchildren; 111 great grandchildren; and 3 brothers—Lewis (Joan) Walker, Ned (Nancy) Walker, and Mark (Carlene) Walker.
Visitations will be in Lovell on Friday, November 2, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Haskell Funeral Home, and Saturday, November 3, at 9:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 3, at 10:00 a.m. following visitation. Dedication of the grave and burial will be at the Lovell Cemetery immediately following the funeral services.
