A Sandy Hook woman and a Columbia policeman died as a result of a head-on collision after press-time Wednesday afternoon, December 20, at Jamestown on Highway 35 South.
Hoye G. Ashley, who had served 12 years on the Columbia City Police force, died instantly in the crash. Ashley, 45, was alone in his car.
Critically injured in the accident was Mrs. Bert Graham, 55, of the Sandy Hook community. In the car with her was Miss Betty Fortenberry, 18, a student at Perkinston Junior College. Miss Fortenberry, a foster daughter, was not seriously injured.
Mrs. Graham died at 4:20 A.M. Tuesday morning at Marion County General Hospital. She had been employed for several years in the West Marion High School cafeteria and was a member of the Sandy Hook Methodist Church.
Funeral services for both victims were in the charge of Colonial Funeral Home. Services for Mr. Ashley were held Friday afternoon from the chapel of Colonial Funeral Home with interment at Collins. Dr. J. D. Slay, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiated.
Members of the Columbia Police Department and nephews served as pallbearers. Other members of the police department were honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Ashley is survived by his wife of Columbia; one daughter, Mrs. Ford Fortenberry; two sons, Steven and Greg; and his mother, Mrs. G. I. Ashley of Collins.
Services for Mrs. Graham were held at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday at Sandy Hook Methodist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
