Howard was a Boy Scout during his teens and became an Eagle Scout. In 1950, he was at a National Camporee when the Korean conflict began, so when he returned home, he immediately enlisted in the US Navy. He was proud to be a Korean veteran.
Howard was an ordained minister of the Assemblies of God. He served as pastor of four Kansas churches, one in Ohio and one in Klawock, Alaska. He was a member of Northland Cathedral in Kansas City, Missouri and served as children's pastor in the late 1980's and volunteered with the church's Royal Rangers ministry, being known as, "Commander Ho." In recent years, he has volunteered at Gracious Promise in Kansas City, KS.
Howard had a pastor's heart. During his retirement years, he ministered in several villages in Alaska, filling pulpits in Hydaburg, Klawock, Emmonak, Kotlik, Kotzebue and Anchorage. He and Marge resided in Klawock from 1999 to 2004 while he was pastor of Prince of Peace Assembly of God. After they moved back to Kansas City, KS he returned to Emmonak during the summers of 2005 and 2007 to assist with Camp AN (Agaiutim Nune, "The Place of God") for Yupik Eskimo children, teens and adults. He considered his ministry in Alaska the greatest adventure of his life. In recent months he has painted a number of landscapes featuring scenes in Alaska, Kansas, and New Mexico.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a brother. He is survived by his wife and family and his brother Paul Marshall and his wife Barbara of Carrollton, Texas and many nephews, nieces and friends. His life scripture was Romans 8:28. He will be greatly missed.
