On Wednesday, 24 Oct 2018, our most cherished, Richard Basham of Mabscott passed away in the Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown following a brief illness. He was in his 84th year. An only child, “Dickie” as he was affectionately known was born on Christmas Eve in 1933, at Mabscott. He was the son of Edith Gamble Basham.
A lifelong resident of the Mabscott community, Dickie served in the Army National Guard, he held the rank of Sgt. 1st Class. Dickie’s mother owned Rees Electric on City Avenue here in Beckley. He went to work for her when he was 18 years of age, retiring in 2010 as the owner and operator. Active in the Mabscott community, for several years, he was the fire chief of the Mabscott Fire Department. A faithful member of the Mabscott United Methodist Church, Dickie operated the sound system for the church.
In 1953 he married his beloved wife, Betty. Dickie and Betty celebrated 65 years of marriage this year. To their union was born two children, Jerri Lynn and Richard David. Sadly their daughter, Jerri Cullop passed away on 1 May 2016, from a brief battle of cancer.
This Sunday, 28 Oct we will honor the life of Richard “Dickie” Basham with a “Service of Remembrance”. The burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens on Monday.
