Velma M. (Poignant) Briner, age 93, of Washburn, Ill., passed away at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at St. Joseph Nursing Home in Lacon, Ill.
She was born June 3, 1918, in Metamora, Ill. to Joseph and Ida (Gries) Marchand. She married Harold Poignant on July 31, 1937, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Metamora. He passed away Dec. 23, 1972. She then married Dwight Briner. He died Sept. 15, 1995.
Surviving are her children, Eugene (Mary Lynn) Poignant of Low Point, Ill., Lois Danhof of Lacon, Ill., Esther (Darrell) Ely of Lacon, Ill., and Betsy (Nolan) Gerry of Brimfield, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Delight (Mike) Massey of Florida; 15 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. Velma is also survived by sisters, Bernadine Janssen, Mildred (Art) Gieseking and Mary (Chuck) Schraub, all of Metamora; and one brother, Wilbert Marchand of Metamora.
She was preceded in death by one son, Leroy, and three brothers.
Velma was a dedicated homemaker and a loving mother. She belonged to the Pinochle Club, Red Hat Club and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Velma enjoyed cooking and baking, and her grandchildren always enjoyed her special cookie recipes.
