Missing his sweetheart for twenty-four years, Darwin Eugene Smith, 86, of Sandy, was reunited with her after passing away peacefully in his home on Thursday, October 18, 2018.

Darwin was born July 28, 1932 in Salt Lake City to Hadyn Layborn and Lula Mae (Beesley) Smith. After graduating from South High School, he joined the United States Army at age seventeen on October 26, 1949. As one of the youngest sergeants who served in the Korean War, he fought in five major battles, earning him a Korean Service Medal with five bronze stars, a Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and an Occupation Medal (Japan). He was honorably discharged on October 25, 1952.

After returning home from the Korean War, he met and married his soulmate, Lois Coleman Smith, on February 14, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple. Darwin attended the University of Utah for two years. He also attended Utah Technical School, where he graduated as a master electrician. He worked as a union electrician and owned a few side businesses. Darwin and Lois raised three sons in the Salt Lake area.

Darwin loved spending time with his family. His favorite activities included camping, four-wheeling, hunting, shooting, and watching western movies. Every day, Darwin would study the Bible to keep his mind sharp. His belief in Christ and the resurrection were very important to him.

Darwin is survived by his two sons, Roger Craig Smith and Mark Wayne (Angel) Smith; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Coleman Smith; a son, Rodney Gene Smith; brothers, Hadyn Lowell Smith and Wayne Smith; and a sister, Shirley Lou Smith.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 North N Street (850 East).
