Joan (Becker Bub) Smith, 88, of Greene, passed away peacefully on October 10th, 2018 at Elizabeth ChurchManor. She was the daughter of Roland and Ruby (Boice) Becker and was also predeceased by her husband, Reynolds Smith; twin sister, Jean Mentzer and her brother, Robert Becker. She is survived by her sons, Keith Bub, Kurt (Brenda) Bub, Karl Bub and Kevin (Mindy) Bub; grandchildren, Joshua, Erica, Cassandra, Katelyn, Kyle, Tara, Melanie, Logan; 4 great-grandchildren, and stepdaughters, Karen Cofield, CynsieKraines, and Deb Bishop. Joan was born in Poughkeepsie, NY. At age 10, she embarked on what became her life-long passion of sharing her love of music and the piano. After high school she attended Potsdam College graduating with a Music Education degree. In 1952, she married first husband Robert Bub and eventually settled in Greene in 1956. She spent the next 60 years sharing her musical passion with friends, family and her community. Joan was a piano teacher, organist, church choir director, and accompanist for Raymond Chorus and Greene Performing Arts Forum… if there was a way to spread her joy of music she found it. She was a 50 year member of the First Congregational Church, spent many years volunteering with Meals on Wheels, Christian Caring Service and was recipient of the 2009 Greene Chamber of Commerce Citizen Of the year award, the first for the Arts. She enjoyed light-hearted debates sitting in the sunroom with husband Reyn , family trips to the Adirondacks, her home adorned with family memories, planting flowers in the garden, tennis, figure skating, a brisk walk, a good bowl of ice cream, and never missed a moment to teach, inspire or cheer one on. She loved her church and her community but most importantly spending time with her family and friends. She has powerfully helped shape numerous students love for music. The family thanks everyone for their endearing support especially over the past several years. She has left a living legacy, with not only with her family, but with her musical family. The family will receive friends at the First Congregational Church, Greene, NY, Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 9:00 to 10:00am to share memories of Joan’s life. A memorial service will begin at 10:00am. Burial service will immediately follow at Sylvan Lawn Cemetery, Greene. Donations can be made in Joan’s memory to Smile Train, or the First Congregational Church, Greene, New York. Arrangements are by Root Funeral Home 23 North Chenango Street, Greene, New York 13778 and condolences may be made to the family at www.rootfh.com.
