Sarah Tiffany, the last wife of Edward H. Tiffany, had been charged by a neighbor, Samuel Coy, with keeping a disorderly house, and in an article in the Oswego Daily Palladium of October 12, 1893, describing the lawsuit, and the effort to have her six children sent to an institution for proper training, she claimed that wife No. 2 (Sophia Ellis Tiffany), who had succeeded in getting Edward's civil war pension, had not been legally married to him. Sarah and Edward were, according to the article, married in 1877 on the death of Edward's first wife (whose identity [and even her existence] remains unknown).
