Betty O’Neill died peacefully at her home on October 13, 2018. She was 97 years old. She was a loving wife and mother and a dear friend to many. She was born on January 18, 1921 in Marietta. Ohio. She graduated from Marietta High School and attended Marietta College. On July 29, 1945 she married C. William (Bill) O’Neill and they remained a devoted couple until his death in 1978.
She is survived by their two children Charles William (Dub) O’Neill and Peggy Pokorski. For Betty family always came first. In 1950 Bill and Betty moved with their children from Marietta to Columbus settling in Upper Arlington. Betty was the First Lady of Ohio from 1956 through 1958 while Bill served a term as governor of the state.
Betty was a dedicated member of First Community Church for sixty years including participation in the Women’s Guild, Group Y, and the Couples Circle. Her unmatched enthusiasm for the Guild’s election day bake sale resulted in the members naming it in her honor. The day before her death she was actively pursuing her preparations for this year’s sale. She was a fan of Ohio State sports teams and the Cincinnati Reds.
She was an avid gardener. As a resident of the Trouville condominium complex for more than forty years she undertook on her own to create flower gardens in many of its common areas. She took great pleasure in the fact that some of her handiwork can still be seen blooming each spring.
Her family would like to thank Dr. Kenneth Ecker for the attentive and understanding care he provided to Betty during the later years of her life. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road in Upper Arlington on October 22, 2018 at 11am.
