Bruce Lynn Byrnes age 69 of Ewen, MI, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Hospice House of Mid Michigan, Lansing, MI.
Funeral Services will be held at Smith Family Funeral Homes - Houghton Chapel, Ovid, MI, on Friday, October 19, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 2-8 P.M. with family present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018, at 1:00 P.M. at a Cemetery in Bruce Crossing, MI. The name of the cemetery will be listed as soon as possible.
Bruce was born in St. Johns, MI on September 18, 1949 the son of Hugh and Doris (Upton) Byrnes. Bruce resided most of his life in the Ovid and Ewen areas and was a graduate of Ovid-Elsie High School class of 1967. Bruce worked for General Motors in Lansing, MI for 31 years before his retirement in 1999. He loved living in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for the past 20 years. Bruce truly enjoyed Michigan's natural resources of hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved farming, gardening, reading and music. Bruce was a history buff of the American west. He loved watching the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers at the South Branch Saloon. Spending time with his family and friends was very important to him. Bruce was a member of the Ontonagon County Sportsman's Club and served on the McMillan Township Board of Review.
He is survived by his brother Randy Byrnes and Verna Lyon of Ovid, MI; sister Denise Byrnes of Lansing, MI; nephew Mathew Byrnes and Kristie Kress of Elsie, MI; niece Hillary and Nick Fabus of Ovid, MI; great-nephews and nieces: Ethan, Calen and Braylon Byrnes, Chase and Cade Fabus; sister-in-law Karen Byrnes of Chassell, MI; and aunt Waneta Byrnes of Ovid, MI. Bruce is also survived by many cousins and close friends from downstate and the Upper Peninsula. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gary Byrnes.
Bruce's family would like to thank all the staff at the University of Michigan Hospitals for their superior care and compassion and the Hospice House of Mid Michigan.
