DIES AT BENTON RIDGE

BENTON RIDGE - Mrs. Sophia Reid, 78 years old, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hartje, the former of whom was one of the survivors of the famous invasion of Russia, by Napoleon Bonaparte, and the French army, died at the home of her son, William H. Ferrall, in this village, about 2 o'clock this afternoon. She had been ill for some time from the infirmities of age. Her illness took a sudden turn for the worse about three days ago, and she had been unable to leave her bed since that time.

Mrs. Reid was born in Columbiana county in 1834. When she was six years old, she came to this county with her parents and has since resided here. in 1853 she was married to James Ferrell. They had three sons, two of whom survive, the third, Austin, having died about fifteen years ago. Those surviving are W. H. Ferrall, and A. W. Ferrall, proprietor of a meat market in this village.

She was married a second time to Gordon Reid, who died about fifteen years ago. She had resided in her own home in the village here, until about two weeks ago, when she went to live with her son, where death occurred.

Three sisters also survive, Mrs. John Radabaugh, of Liberty township, Mrs. Mary Israel, of Alliance, Ohio, and Rebecca Hartje, who resides in California.

The Otterbein United Brethren church was the scene of her conversion in 1864, and she had been active in all church work since that time. She was a member of the M. E. church of this village for more than twenty years.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church, Rev. L. H. Hoover officiated and burial was in the village cemetery.

Lawrence Hartje, father of Mrs. Reid, was a member of a regiment of 1032 men, which accomplished Napoleon Bonaparte on his memorable invasion of Russia, and participated in the disastrous attack on Moscow. But two others, beside himself, of the entire regiment, returned to France. Mr. Hartje's last resting place hallows the soil of Hancock County, Ohio.
