Lyle Clyde Grigsby
November 01, 1926 - October 07, 2018

Lyle C. Grigsby, age 91, of Royal Oak, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2018 with family by his side. He was born November 1, 1926 to Clyde Charles and Erla (Brown) Grigsby in Petoskey, MI.

Raised on a farm in beautiful northern Michigan, he graduated from Petoskey High School in 1944 before enlisting in the Navy. He was an Aviation Cadet, training to be a pilot during WWII, when the war ended.

Returning to northern Michigan, he married (Mary) Agnes Foster on June 26, 1948. They shared more than fifty wonderful years together, moving to Royal Oak in the mid-1950s, where they made a home. His beloved wife preceded him in death in 2002.

Lyle worked for Michigan Bell Telephone for over 30 years, starting as a lineman. After completing specialized training, he became one of the first wave of computer programmers for Michigan Bell, working at a time when programs were still written in binary code. He was a Senior Systems Analyst when he retired in the ‘80s.

A patient and dedicated father to his five children, Lyle shared his lifelong love of baseball, coaching for the Catholic Youth Association teams at St Dennis parish in Madison Heights for a number of years. He was active in the Boy Scouts for over five decades, serving as leader of Troop #1618 and as a council member. He was also involved in Camp Fire Girls, teaching camping and canoeing skills, and in the YMCA Indian Guides.

His community service continued past retirement, including an enjoyable period as a volunteer docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

He was a gifted woodcarver and belonged to the Frankenmuth, Metro and Central Texas Wood Carvers Guilds. His fascination with faces is evident in much of his work.

A man of few words, Lyle let his actions and example speak for him. Those who knew him will remember him for his deep principles, his kindness and his wry wit.

He will be greatly missed by his children, his grandchildren and great-grandkids, his nieces and nephews and lifelong friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother Gordon Grigsby and sisters Phyllis Grigsby and Joyce Shanley, and his granddaughter Brittany Grigsby.

He is survived by his children, Anthony (Gwen) Grigsby, Kathlynn Fowler, Kimberle (Ron) Wilson, Patricia Grigsby and Thomas (Shawn) Grigsby, his grandchildren, Dharma (Devon) Akmon, Sonya (John) Wardell, William (Tina) Grigsby, Megan Grigsby and Kelly (Colt) Kaiser, and his great-grandchildren, Charity, Dustin, Jaxson, Tiffany, Tyler, Desmond, Simon and Brendan.

A Funeral Service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 12 at the Kinsey-Garrett Funeral Home in Royal Oak with Visitation on Thursday October 11 from 1-4 & 6-8pm. Interment will be at a later date at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.
