John R. "Dick" Ely, 76, of Mazon, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 6, 2018 in Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Born August 30, 1942 in Morris, he was the son of the late John V. and Margaret (Bundy) Ely.

Educated in the Burleigh School and Mazon Grade School, Dick graduated from Mazon Verona Kinsman High School with the Class of 1960. He attended Blackburn College and joined the Air Force in February of 1961. On August 12, 1961, he married Verla Jean Farber. They were married for 57 years.

During his Air Force years he was involved with the Upper Atmosphere Atomic Testing while he was stationed on Palmyra Island in the South Pacific. He spent a year at Soc Trang Vietnam in 1963 and 1964. He was given the Expeditionary Medal for this service. He was a member of the Mazon American Legion.

After leaving the Air Force, Dick worked for one year at Des Plaines Chemical and for 9 years at the Joliet Arsenal, followed by 26 years at Northern Petrochemical Plant in Morris, from which he retired.

Survivors include his wife and best friend, Verla; two daughters, Lauretta Jean (Phil Creasey) Burke of Carlinville, IL and Johnna Lynne (Juve) Garcia of Mazon; two sons, John Theodore (Jackie) Ely and Tyson (Brittany Brandt) Ely, both of Mazon; one sister, Gail Isaac of Colorado; 14 grandkids, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be Tuesday, October 9, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Dick's Life will be held at the funeral home Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastor Karen Fabian of the Mazon United Methodist Church.

Interment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Abraham Lincoln National Honor Guard. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Preferred memorials may be made in Dick's name to the Mazon United Methodist Church.
