Johnnie "Hoot" Gibson began his career with the Dallas Police Department on August 1, 1922.

His career ended on April 19, 1923, when he along with H.D. Nobles were patrolling the downtown area of Dallas. They observed someone standing inside Grant's Drug Store, at 3:45 a.m. They stopped their motorcycles nearby and ran toward the drug store with their guns drawn. Nobles went to the rear as Gibson approached the front door. The burglar fired at Gibson from inside the store. Gibson fired his gun into the store. Gibson was shot in the neck and abdomen. He then fell and died on the sidewalk. The burglar fled through the front door, before Nobles pursued from the rear of the store. Merchandise was stacked in the middle of the store with the suspect leaving behind fingerprints and an overcoat. Detectives John Henderson and Will Fritz believed the suspects were black males who also burglarized the Star Cash Store across the street at about the same time of the shooting.

A reward was offered since suspects questioned were released shortly thereafter. Detectives traced the maker of the overcoat through several cities, but they were unable to uncover any new leads. The suspect was never found.

Gibson left behind his parents, five sisters and one brother. Services were Friday at West Dallas Baptist Church with the burial at West Dallas Cemetery (Western Heights).

Officer Gibson's name may be found on the Texas Peace Officer's Memorial, located in Austin, Texas. (17,C,01)
