This is a strange tale. When researching other family members an article was located online on genealogybank.com. The article was published in the Daily Argus newspaper in Rock Island, IL on 26 Jan 1874. To sum it up, around the Fall of 1873 Joseph and Minna settled on an amount, he left the family due to circumstances, leaving her the property, it was believed that he may have been robbed around the same time by step-sons and buried under a hog pen on the family farm. A body believed to be his was discovered after the authorities searched the farm for money and items that were stolen by Minna, sons, and daughters from surrounding homes and businesses.

This gets more bizarre when an article published on 17 Mar 1874 in the Chicago IL paper the Daily Inter Ocean, writes that Joseph turned up in town having returned from Iowa where he had been wintering. With this new revelation, it's not known when he died or where he is buried. For now, 1873 will be used as death date based on the original story.
