Old Sam T was born about 1796, most likely in Montgomery County, MD. He is the son of Thomas and Margaret Sparrow Balding. He is the grandson of James and Elizabeth Pottenger Baldwin as well as Thomas and Ann Sparrow. Through DNA testing of his descendants, we have been able to trace his lineage back to John Baldwin aka "John from South River" or "John the Quaker" who lived in Anne Arundel County, MD @ 1650.

Old Sam T married Margaret Love, 26 Jun 1818, in Bardstown, Nelson County, KY.

Their children are: John, Elizabeth Jane, Thomas, James, William, Samuel, McKenzie "Mack", Mary, Margaret and Hannah. Mary and Margaret did not survive to adulthood.

Old Sam T was a distiller of corn whiskey during the time he lived in Nelson County, KY. He relocated to Indiana about 1830. He continued to make whiskey until he took up general farming (about 1850). Around 1863 he moved to Forest Township, Vernon County, WI. After the death of his wife, he lived in the home of his daughter, Elizabeth Jane Boldon Parrish. He died at her home in 1885.
