Berlin Watson Bell, 91, of Roanoke, formerly of New Castle, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 9, 2007. He was born April 29, 1916 in Laurel Branch, Monroe County, West Virginia, the son of Walter W. Bell and Cordie Smith Bell Bailey. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Irene Howdyshell Bell in 1998; two brothers, Averill Bell, and Alvie Bell; two half brothers, Corbitt Bell, and Ira Bell; and three sisters, Emma Hawse, Beulah Martin, and Irma Broughman. Survivors include two brothers, Roy Bell of Ronceverte, W.Va., Denny Bell of Clifton Forge, Va.; one sister, Jean Miller of Covington, Ga.; and one half brother, Dalma Bailey of Covington, Va. He is also survived by his nephews, Larry Howdyshell of Salem, Va., Michael Howdyshell of Roanoke, Va.; his nieces Linda Hellier of Annapolis, Md., Carol Ann Magnante of Anaheim, Calif., Maxine Hall of Moneta, Va., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was an army veteran of World War II, Company A, 141st infantry, of the 36th division, serving in France and Germany and was highly decorated with nine medals. He spent his last 20 career years as a postal carrier in Craig County. Berlin was a long-time member of New Castle United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School superintendent, teacher, and choir member. His love of the Lord inspired him to write the music and lyrics to a number of beautiful hymns. Church and community members remember him as a prominent citizen, gracious in giving and devoted to others. A Celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 at New Castle United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lowell Stovall officiating. Interment will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church. The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday May 11, 2007, at Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle. www.paitselfh.com.
