Kate Callaway Carter, 94, Johnson City, died Saturday, September 22, 2018, at her residence.

Kate was born in Knoxville and was raised in Johnson City. She was the daughter of Charles Furlow Callaway and Verna Kitty Shetterly Callaway.

Mrs. Carter received a Bachelor’s Degree from East Tennessee State College and then a Master’s Degree from Columbia Bible College.

Kate, along with her late husband, was a career missionary, serving with the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Santiago, Chile from 1954 to 1992, at which time Mr. and Mrs. Carter returned to Johnson City to serve their home church, Central Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Carter, two sons, James Edward “Ted” Carter, infant William David Carter and her brother, James Callaway.

Kate is survived by four sons, Charles Callaway Carter and wife Maria, Johnson City, William Thomas Carter and wife Barbara, Oak Ridge, Stephen Alan Carter, Johnson City, Robert Lawrence Carter and wife Carmen, Santiago, Chile; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service honoring the life of Mrs. Carter will be conducted Friday, September 28, 2018, at 7:00 P.M., from the Sanctuary of Central Baptist Church, with Dr. Ronald R. Murray and Dr. Tommy Hood, officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 5:30-7:00 P.M. at the church.

The graveside committal service will be held Saturday at 10:00 A.M. in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Those planning to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home by 9:30 A.M. Saturday to proceed to the cemetery.
